Protostar Labs signs ESA contract for chromosphere monitoring instrument

Protostar Labs is happy to announce the signing of a new contract with the European Space Agency for the development of CROMIS, the ChROmosphere Monitoring InStrument. Funded under ESA's Call for Proposals for Croatian entities, this project, beginning on September 15, 2025, marks a major milestone for Croatia in space science and astrophysics.

CROMIS is a space-borne H-alpha telescope that aims to deliver high-resolution, high-cadence full-disk images of the solar chromosphere. It will provide critical data for space weather forecasting, solar physics research, and applications like satellite safety, GNSS reliability, and power grid operations. This mission overcomes limitations of ground-based observatories, and serves as an important stepping stone to bigger things for Protostar Labs and Croatia as a whole.

The first phase will last 16 months, and it will advance the technology from TRL 1 to TRL 3 through stages including assessments, architecture design, critical component prototyping, as well as a future roadmap for full development, and finally launch and operations. Protostar Labs proudly leads as prime contractor, partnering with Hvar Observatory at the University of Zagreb for solar physics expertise and Initium Space, providing space systems engineering expertise.

This project makes high-quality solar data publicly available, and elevates Croatia’s role in ESA’s science and space weather programs. It is Croatia’s first space science instrument, and excitement is guaranteed, so stay tuned for future updates!
